erz were shortlisted in the competition for proposals to commemorate Taits Tower which was constructed as part of the Exhibition of Empire in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. The exhibition in 1938 was a confident celebration of modernity, which unintentionally coincided with a major turning point in world history. The proposal considers the idea of modernity and modernism as historical artifact. The proposal celebrates the optimism and confidence of the exhibitions (early) 20th century vision of modernity, but also celebrates the fact that we have moved beyond it. A metal section, its length identical to the height of the tower, is suspended within the trees at the top of the linear ridge. Its starting point is the original base of the tower, it forms a clean horizontal line, passing between the tree canopies. This marking of the presence of the tower rotated through 90 degrees changes its relationship to the trees. The suspended metal section is sited to be a surprising and intimate discovery.
